Nicky Walsh Match Report
YOSI CC vs. UOP
The overcast and dreary weather greeted both YOSI and UOP for their first games of the 2010 season.
Mike Bell, the Captain of UOP, graciously agreed that YOSI could bat first as we had a few players missing and we needed to get started as soon we could, with the impending likelihood of darkness creeping in this early in the season.
Johnty and Simo went into the middle first and it took awhile for them both to get a feel for the bowling with a very slow start, only 7 runs of the first 4 overs. At this stage of the innings it looked like a score of about 50 was on the cards.
Johnty was the first to be out with the score on 20 and 12 runs to his name. Harry (Gilo) was next in didn’t really get going with before he was out bowled for 10 runs.
Pete Dawson was in at number 4 and did well with a 4 on his first scoring runs.
All this time Simo had been working away scoring singles, one “2” and a “4” and a good total of 16, before succumbing to the bowling of Ali.
Nicky Walsh provided an excellent display of hitting the bad ball hard; in fact he hit a six so hard it he broke his bat and the ball nearly went all the way to Horsham! Along with two “4’s” he reached a respectable 17 before being caught out. Paul, at number 6, was the last to bat and got the highest number of runs with 22 including (his now legendary) two 6’s.
The total of 94 was excellent considering the slow(ish) start and from only 16 overs.
….and everyone got into double figures
Ian Simpson 16
John Schluter 12
Harry Giles 10
Pete Dawson 12 Not out
Nicky Walsh 17
Paul Taylor-South 22
Extras 5
94 seemed achievable for UOP as we only had 9 in the field and Ricky had received a text from Danny (new daddy) Spong that he had “baby meltdown” and couldn’t make it. Pondidge was hoping to get along, possibly a little late, but had got waylaid and phoned and offered to come down and field.
Paul opened the bowling from the “Gtown” end and Chris (who was poached from the Law College team, but he does work in the YOSI so that’s ok) opened from the Pavilion end. Paul was initially having trouble with his run up, changing the start point a number of times before getting it right, although this didn’t seem to affect his precision. Chris was a little wayward on his first over but soon found line and length the trouble the batsmen. The two openers from UOP we settling in nicely until the 5th over when Mike (Captain) skied one of Paul’s slower bowls and was caught (after a bit of a panic) by Ricky at mid on. Pete Richardson came on to replace Paul and with slow but accurate deliveries soon took a wicket in his first over. Ricky took over at the Pavilion end.
Pete collected 2 more wickets in his second over and 2 more in his third, giving him a well deserved “fifer”. One of the dismissals was a “caught behind” by Gilo (who also spent much of the match picking up the bails with his insatiable appetite for a stumping) and two of them were catches to Ricky. Ricky also got a “caught and bowled” (taking his tally of catches to 4) in his second over and “bowled in his third.
All the while UOP didn’t ever really get into their stride with the wickets falling and they ended after the 16 overs with 8 wickets down and 75 runs on the board
(The last over was a wicket maiden)
Paul Taylor-South 1 for 8
Chris Sanderson 0 for 23
Pete Richardson 5 for 20
Ricky Bailey 2 for 19
All bowlers had 4 overs
Thanks to Michelle Watts for scoring
All in all a good victory for YOSICC with everyone playing a valuable part.
Next week the YOSICC vs The Law College
